Newsy Notes from Paradise – Mr. R. Longley and Bride Leave For Truro – Number of Distinguished Visitors at Paradise
An enthusiastic company of relatives and friends greeted the coming here of Mr. Ronald Longley and his bride, formerly Miss Vera Harris Eaton of Granville. After spending a few days at the home of Mr. Longley’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry A. Longley, they proceeded to Wolfville, attending a part of the convention. Leaving Wolfville the happy young couple went to Truro, where they will make their new home. They are followed by the good will and best wishes of their many friends here.
Mr. Gordon Longley has returned to Whycocomagh, Inverness Co., after spending a two weeks vacation at his home.
Miss Muriel Elliott has gone to Liverpool, N.S., where she will teach during the coming year.
Mr. Chesley Rice recently spent a weeks vacation in Clementsport.
Mr. Walter Rickertson of Norwood and Mr. Gordon Cummings of Lynn, have been guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Bishop.
Mrs. W.E. Palfrey of Lawrencetown, has been visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Longley.
Miss Sarah Longley of Boston returned home Saturday, Aug. 30th. Friends here are much interested.
Miss Hilda Longley has been spending her vacation with her mother Mrs. I.M. Longley.
Mr. Fred Doig and daughter have been guests at the home of Mrs. I.M. Longley.
Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Hebb of New Hampshire, returned homeward by automobile after touring N.S. and visiting Mr. Hebb’s sister, Mrs. Caleb Gillis.
Miss Edna Marshall returned to Newton, Mass., Aug. 29th after spending a vacation with her mother at her former home here.
Mr. Max Saunders and Mr. Byron Chesley motored to Wolfville, where they are attending the convention.
Mrs. Reginald Bishop has been enjoying a visit with her parents in Granville.
Capt. and Mrs. Monies motored to Halifax recently, where they attended the fashionable wedding of Mrs. Monies’ sister, Miss Mabel James Angus, who at that time became the wife of Captain John Henry Reginald Orr.
Mrs. Elizabeth Angus of Ayrshire, Scotland, mother of Mrs. Monies and also her sister, Miss Sheila Angus are now visiting at the home of Captain and Mrs. Monies.
Captain and Mrs. Monies are occupying, for the summer, the former Reginald Mason home.
Mrs. Elias Curry of Wolfville, is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Harding Loyte. Mrs. Curry is on her way to Atlanta, Georgia, where she will spend the winter.
Mrs. H.P. Layte spent several days at Margaretville with Mrs. Vernon C. Morse and family.
H.C. Robinson, Ph.D. bacteriologist for the Geneva Hospital, N.Y., with his wife and family, who motored to N.S. by way of Digby, spent a weeks visit with their parents, Rev. and Mrs. W.H. Robinson and are now returning by way of Sackville, where they will also make a visit.
Dr. and Mrs. C.I. Margeson of Vancouver, with Mrs. Mary Churchill of Hantsport, N.S. were recent guests at the home of Rev. and Mrs. W.H. Robinson.
Mrs. F.A. Quill of Bermuda, who is making her fourth visit to N.S., is a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G. Covert.
Miss Edith Wilson of Melrose, Mass. Spent the week-end with Mrs. G. Covert and Miss Ella Wilson.
Mr. and Mrs. J.M. Mollison returned to Mass., after spending a month with Mrs. Mollison’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Covert.
Miss Leone Banks left home Saturday 30th, for Canso, where she will teach during the coming winter.
Miss Leola Banks has accepted a school at Hill Grove.
Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Banks went to Morristown, Saturday, Aug. 30th, to attend the funeral of Mr. Bank’s father, Mr. Abraham Banks.
Mr. Clyde and Mr. Jerauld Hartlen of Halifax, on their way to Yarmouth visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Williams.
Mr. and Mrs. Charles Maker of Malden, Mass., spent a week with Mrs. Maker’s brother, Mr. George W. Wilson.
Mr. and Mrs. John Wentworth and son of Needham, Mass., also Mr. and Mrs. Woodman of Melrose, Mass., recently visited at the home of Mr. and Mrs. John Jackson.
Miss Louise Harris of Annapolis, spent a week with her sister, Mrs. John Jackson.
The wooden bridge across Paradise brook is being replaced by a concrete structure.

Newsy Budget from Paradise – Beautiful Floral Displays in Local Gardens – Delegations From W.M.S. Visit Dalhousie – Personal Notes
Miss Eleanor Longley is now convalescing at her home, following a difficult but very successful throat operation which she underwent at the Victoria General Hospital Halifax.
Dr. and Mrs. William Daley motored through from Halifax to spend the week-end with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. H.W. Longley.
Mr. and Mrs. C. Haveland Morse and daughter, Margaret, of Newtonville, Mass., have been enjoying a two week’s vacation with their mother, Mrs. Samuel Morse, and sister Miss Annie Morse.
Mr. and Mrs. Norman Longley with Rev. and Mrs. W.A. Starratt of Conn. spent a month touring the provinces of Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island. Most of their visiting was done in P.E.I., where they met another daughter of Mrs. Longley, wife of Rev. C.A. Dawson, of Montreal. Mr. and Mrs. Dawson and family were visiting at Mr. Dawson’s former home.
Rev. and Mrs. Solandt returned Sept. 4th, to their home in Granby, Conn.
Mr. and Mrs. Milledge Daniels have been spending two weeks in Lockport visiting their daughter, Mrs. F.C. Balcom.
Mr. and Mrs. Frank Balcom returned to Paradise with Mr. and Mrs. Daniels for the week-end.
Miss Rowena Morse spent the week end at her home here recently.
Mis Beatrice Slocom of Mt. Hanley is spending a few days with Mrs. Harold Longley.
Miss Gladys Jackson with a party of friends motored to Truro where they spent Labor Day.
Miss Gladys Jackson is visiting in Annapolis, the guest of her friend Miss Ada Woodbury.
Mrs. W.S. Smith spent several days in St John recently where she attended the convention of the U.B.W.M.U.
Mrs. John MacNeill and daughter Ruby, wife and daughter of Dr. John MacNeill, of Summerside, P.E.I., are guests of Mrs. Vernon C. Morse, at Ellenhurst.
Miss Beatrice Wamboldt of Toronto is visiting at the home of her sister, Mrs. A.W. Gillis.
Warren Longley, Carl Starratt, Edgar Bent, Fred Balcom, Raymond Longley with Major Harold Longley are training in camp on the military grounds at Middleton.
A large delegation from the W.M.S. of Paradise, went to Dalhousie, Sunday, Sept. 1st, where they attended a public meeting of the Dalhousie Missionary Society. Mrs. Shipp, pres. of the Dalhousie society, presided at the service. The program was provided by members of the Cora Elliott Mission Band, under the leadership of the mission president, Mrs. Brooks. The Paradise society contributed toward the program a solo by Mrs. Ralph Beard and a reading by Miss Alice Longley, after which Mrs. W. S. Smith gave some very interesting and outstanding “gleanings and gleams” of the recent convention held in St. John by the United Baptist Women’s Missionary Union of the Maritime Provinces.
Mr. and Mrs. J.C. Phinney spent Wednesday, Sept. 3rd at the home of Rev. H.H. Phinney, Kingston.
Mr. Richard Marshall, Clarence, spent the week-end with Mr. and Mrs. R.E. Williams.
Mr. J.H. Shearer and family are visiting relatives and attending the Exhibition in St. John.
Mr. Anthony Banks has returned from Charlottetown, P.E. Island, where he has been working on the potato inspection staff of the Dom. Gov. After spending a few days with his parents he will leave for Ontario to resume his studies at the Agricultural College at Guelph.
Some very beautiful and prize winning asters are being raised by Mrs. H.P. Layte this year. Some of Mrs. Layte’s asters measure 5 inches across and larger ones have been picked.
Referring to flowers reminds us of some very wonderful dalhlias seen recently on the premises of Mr. Frank Ward in Clarence. We would like to make mention also of Mrs. Ward’s elaborate display of Gladioli.
Under the leadership of our teachers Mr. Ronald Longley and Mrs. MacDougall life in the school house is beginning to settle down to the normal of school day possibilities and expectations. As we wish the best possible for our boys and girls so we trust this school year may prove equally satisfactory and profitable to our teachers.

The pupils of Paradise High School of which Mrs. F.H. Balcom was principal did exceptionally well in the Provincial examinations. Six received their grade XI certificates; Lizzie Banks, Leola Banks, Margaret Freeman, Margaret Trimper, Helen Starratt and Chesley Rice. Those receiving grade X certificates were Marjorie Morse, Evelyn Leonard, Rosamond Longley and Karl Starratt. In grade IX were sent who received their certificates Muriel Ritcey, Edith Bent, Dorothy Balcom Dorothy Saunders, Malcolm Leonard, Warren Longley and Edgar Bent.
Mr. and Mrs. M.C. Daniels of Paradise, have returned for after spending three weeks with Mr. and Mrs. F.H. Balcom, Lockeport. On their return they accompanied Mr. and Mrs. Balcom and children on a motor trip along the South Shore to Halifax and from there home through the Valley. Like all others they were delighted with the roads and scenery along the shore. After a few days in Paradise, Mr. and Mrs. Balcom and family will return to Lockeport.

Social Events at Paradise – Shower for Miss Longley – Boy Scouts Have Corn Boil – Summer Visitors Still in Paradise
About forty friends met on Saturday evening, Sept. 20th at “Hillcrest” home of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Longley, and presented to their daughter, Miss Sara Longley, a very acceptable shower of bridal linen and various other gifts. The occasion also being a birthday anniversary for Mr. Longley, a very delightful evening was spent. Games were enjoyed. Refreshments consisting of birthday cake and ice-cream served by the hostess, Mrs. Longley, was very much appreciated by all present.
A meeting of the Boy Scouts was held on Friday evening with Hurdy Freeman, at which time two new members, Phillip White and Russel White of Clarence were received. A corn-boil was enjoyed on Saturday evening by the Boy Scouts.
The Women’s Institute of Paradise will serve lunch Thursday noon at the Rifle Range, West Paradise.
Mr. and Mrs. G. Covert, Miss Ernestine Wright of Dalhousie, and Mr. Jerauld Covert, recently enjoyed a delightful motor trip to Liverpool, visiting Dalhousie and Albany on the way.
Mr. and Mrs. E.B. Kendall, of Sommerville, Mass., have been the guests lately of Mr. and Mrs. G. Covert, while touring Nova scotia in their very comfortable Willeys Knights car.
Mrs. McKay of Annapolis Royal has been the guest of Mrs. John Jackson.
Mrs. Padmore and little sons, Donald and Frank, are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Trimper.
Miss Margaret Trimper is teaching this year at Outram.
Mr. Loran Boehner, of Lynn, Mass., is visiting at the home of his brother, Mr. Aubrey Boehner.
Ritchmond Longley had the misfortune recently to cut his right had badly while working at the mill.
Thanks to the excellent service of Dr. Archibald the extent of the accident is hoped not to be as serious as at first anticipated. At least young Ritchmond himself is decidedly cheerful in spite of a well bound hand and arm.
Mrs. Rupert Chesley was in Kingston, recently where she attended the funeral services of the late Mrs. Robert Starratt.
Miss Marjorie Doig of St. John has been the guest of friends here, visiting at the homes of Mrs. Israel Longley and Mrs. Neal Balcom.
Messrs. Andrew and Stanley Lynk, of Glace Bay, have been the guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harding Layte.
Mrs. J.H. Balcom and daughter Dorothy have returned from Malden, Mass., where they spent a couple of months visiting members of the family and friends.
Mr. George Starratt of Michigan City, Indiana, is spending a vacation at his home here. Mr. Emerson Starratt of Hartford, Conn., has been enjoying a vacation home of several weeks. Both these brothers are welcomed by their many friends.
Mr. and Mrs. Doig, following their wedding trip spent in parts of Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island are visiting in Paradise for a few days before returning to St. John, where they will make their home and where Mr. Doig is located in business.
Mrs. Lucy Phinney of Windsor Forks, has been visiting at the homes of her sons in Paradise.
Mrs. Williamston and family of British Columbia, have been the guests recently of Mrs. Chesley and Mrs. Rice.
