Women’s Institute Gives Interesting Programme – Station Garden Appreciated – Personal and Social Items.

The Women’s Institute met on Thursday afternoon, May 16th at the home of Mrs. Millige Daniels, with the president, Mrs. R.S. Leonard in the chair, matters of business, pertaining to community welfare were transacted. The president was appointed a delegate to the Annual Convention at Truro in June. Following the business meeting an interesting programme was provided by Mrs. F.W. Bishop, which furnished timely hints on matters pertaining to garden and kitchen. Articles on above subjects were read by Mrs. C.W. Durling, Mrs. F.H. Balcom, and Mrs. W.S. Smith. A solo with guitar accompaniment was given by Mrs. Ritchie Elliott. At the close of the meeting very delicious refreshments were served by Mrs. Daniels and Mrs. Balcom.

A much appreciated station garden was planted here recently by the Rail Road Company. Being a community that values all community improvement the little spot so well covered with shrubs, etc., will, we believe, not only receive the good wishes of many but thoughtless, careless travelling around it will be avoided by all. In a peculiar way a home is judged by its trim, clean, attractive entrance. A R.R. Station may serve as either the front or back entrance to a community, but in either case it should help to give the stranger or the home comer a pleasing welcome.

Since it is no secret that this place is proud of its R.R. Station, let us more and more appreciate the possibilities for attractiveness about our station yard.

Mrs. Ritchie Elliott and daughter, Joyce, recently were in Hantsport, for a short time, where Mrs. Elliott attended the funeral services of her father, the late Captain Steven Smith. Capt. Smith followed the sea for over forty years, during which time he saw much of the entire world. Though all his children were born in Liverpool, England, he was resident for many years of Hantsport, N.S. At the time of his death Capt. Smith was living with his daughter in Mass.

Mr. and Mrs. Carl Shaffner and family of Middleton, have been spending a few days vacation with Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Balcom.

Mr. E.C. Longley of this place, has accepted the principalship of the Paradise school for the coming year.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Levy and family recently moved to Bridgetown.

Mrs. S.S. Ruggles, after spending a few days on business in Paradise and Bridgetown, returned to Halifax.

A pantry sale of pies and cakes will be held in the kitchen of the church vestry on Saturday afternoon, May 24th.

There will be service in the Methodist church at Paradise on Sunday evening at 7:30 with music by the Men’s Choir of Lawrencetown.
