July 2, 1924

Mrs. Frank Freeman and son Calder Freeman, Philadelphia are visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Freeman.

Mr. Murray Elliott who has been teaching at Plympton Station for the past term returned home June 26th.

Mrs. Roope of N.Y., is the guest of Mr. and Mrs. Sproule for a couple of weeks.

The Misses Jessie and Charlotte Bowlby, after a successful and much enjoyed years teaching in Halifax and Joggins Mines are home again for the summers vacation.

Miss Alice Ingles and Miss Reta Borden, also Mr. Frank Ingles of Tupperville, spent the week-end at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H. Starratt.

Mrs. Rupert Chesley is visiting friends in Clarence.

Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hinds of Lynn are the guests of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Covert. Mr. and Mrs. Hinds are enjoying their vacation among us exceedingly well, having brought their own car with them this year.

Mr. and Mrs. Floyd Banks of Aylesford spent the week-end at their home here.

Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Beard of Halifax, are visiting Mrs. Beard’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. F.W. Bishop.

Mr. Ronald Longley of Harvard University is spending his vacation at his home here.

Mrs. Almira Maclaren, of Arlington, Mass., is visiting at the parsonage for a couple of weeks.

Rev. Wm. Wright, pastor of the Methodist church at Parrsboro, called at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Guildford Covert during the week. Mr. Wright was formerly stationed at Bear River.

Miss Lucie VanBuskirk and Mr. Vernon Nixon, of Bear River, were Sunday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Nathan Banks.

Miss Leola Banks is at home for the summers vacation. She has spent two years as teacher of the Bear River East school.

The semi-annual social and business meeting of the B.Y.P.U. will be held in the church vestry on Thursday evening, July 3rd. A pleasant and profitable evening is anticipated.

July 9, 1924

Mr. Erle Saunders, with his bride of a few weeks, known formerly to many here as Miss Ora Jackson, of Halifax are visiting relatives in Paradise. Before coming here Mr. and Mrs. Saunders with other members of the family attended the burial services of the body of their late mother, Mrs. Byron Chesley, which took place in The Glades, N.B.

A supper in the church vestry was enjoyed on Thursday evening, July 3rd by members of the B.Y.P.U. This being the occasion of the semi-annual business meeting, the following members were elected to office. Pres. Mr. Robert Longley, Vice-Pres. Miss Helen Starratt, Secty. Mr. Edgar Bent, Treas. Miss Lizzie Banks.

Mr. Fred Balcom was appointed to represent the society in Wolfville at the coming Workers Conference. Five dollars of society funds was voted to be sent to Mr. Machum for Young People’s Work. At the close of the business meeting, Pastor Smith gave a short address commending the faithful services of the retiring president, Mr. Fred Balcom and of those associated with him who so heartily contributed to the successful activities of the society during the past six months. He spoke of a possible goal to be reached in the future, pointing out the society’s weakness as well as its strength. The evening closed after the spending of an hour in the playing of healthy, wholesome games on the church lawn.

Mrs. W.H. Robinson, who has been visiting for nearly two weeks at her old home in Amherst, returned home here Monday, July 7th.

Mr. and Mrs. Fred Jodrie, of Canning, are making a visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. David Jodrie.

Miss Clara Longley of Lawrencetown, is visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Longley.

Mrs. J.S. Longley recently spent a few days in Clementsport among friends.

Miss Helen Pearson of Portland, Me., formerly of Paradise, is visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. H.D. Starratt.

Miss Charlotte Bowlby is housed with the mumps having contracted the same shortly before her school closed.

Miss Idalene Bowlby, Supt. of the Surgical Ward, of Lawrence General Hospital, is spending a months’ vacation at her home here.

Miss Florence Cutter of the Lawrence General Hospital, Mass., is a guest at the home of Mr. and Mrs. B. Bowlby.

The Saturday afternoon pantry sales, held in the local stores, are proving a definite week-end convenience to the busy housewife.

Dr. and Mrs. H.E. Daley, Miss Eleanor Longley, Mr. F.G. Smith, motored from Halifax, July 1st and spent the holiday with Mr. and Mrs. H.H. Longley, Paradise, returning in the evening.

Master Alton and Carl Calnek, Granville Ferry, have spent the week with their aunt, Mrs. Howard Longley, Paradise.

Miss Evelyn Longley, Paradise, is visiting at Halifax, the guest of her sister, Mrs. H.E. Daley.

Annual Business Meeting W.M.A.S. – Many Visitors in Paradise – Other Items of Interest

Mr. and Mrs. Max Saunders are spending the week-end in Kingsport.

Mr. and Mrs. Erle Saunders motored to Halifax recently, where they will visit at Mrs. Saunders’ former home.

Mrs. J. Hadden Balcom, accompanied by her daughter Miss Dorothy, left for ‘Malden, Mass., where they will join Rev. J.H. Balcom and remain for the summer.

Miss Janie Kingley of N.B. is visiting her friends, Mrs. H.W. Robinson, and Mrs. Norman Longley.

Mr. J.W. Sproule spent the 10th with friends in Digby, where Mr. and Mrs. Sproule made their home at one time.

Miss Emma Williams is visiting her cousin, Mrs. Freda Messenger.

Mrs. H.A. Jodrie and her sister Miss Ruth Kempton spent several days of last week visiting at the home of Mr. and Mrs. G.D. Covert. They left on Saturday’s boat for Boston, where Mrs. Jodrie will join her husband who preceded her several months ago and where Miss Kempton will begin her training as a nurse in the Boston City Hospital.

Mrs. Emerson Starratt is spending a vacation with her mother, Mrs. Geo. Starratt.

Mr. Gilmore of Chesley, Mass., is the guest of his aunt, Mrs. Geo. Starratt.

Mrs. H.H. Hopkins and children of N.B., are spending a month with Mrs. Hopkins mother, Mrs. J.C. Phinney.

Miss Leola Banks is visiting her brother Floyd at Morristown.

Mr. Anthony Banks left for Charlottetown, P.E.I., Thursday, July 3rd, where he has accepted a position under the Dept. of Agriculture.

Lawyer Herman Whitman from the West, accompanied by his wife and three children visited recently at the home of his brother, Mr. A.A. Whitman.

Mrs. Almire Maclaren who has been visiting her cousin, Mrs. Eva MacGregor, for the past two weeks, returned to Boston on Saturday, accompanied by Miss Cutler of Lawrence, Mass., the guest here of Miss Idalene Bowlby.

Mrs. L.W. Elliott is spending the week-end with her daughter, Mrs. Vernon C. Morse.

The Misses Mabel and Muriel Elliott have returned from the West, where they taught school during the past year. They will spend the vacation here with their parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Elliott.

Sixteen ladies met in the Church Vestry Friday afternoon at which time two quilts were quilted for Mrs. Millege Daniels. At the close of the afternoon’s work, Mrs. Daniels assisted by her daughter, Mrs. Frank Balcom, served to the ladies one of their delicious suppers in Mrs. Daniel’s home close by.

The well attended July meeting of the W.M.A.S. was held Tuesday afternoon July 8th, with Mrs. J.H. Balcom, previous to her leaving for Boston. Being the occasion of the annual business meeting and election of officers the following members were chosen to office: Pres., Mrs. W.S. Smith; 1st Vice-Pres., Mrs. Norman Longley; 2nd Vice-Pres., Mrs. J.H. Balcom; Secty., Mrs. W.H. Robinson; Treas., Mrs. F.W. Bishop.

A memorial contribution of ten dollars in memory of the late departed sister, Mrs. B.F. Chesley was voted to the work of the Bolivia Mission. After the conducting of regular and other particular business the programme committee, Mrs. B.F. Bowlby and Mrs. Chas. Covert furnished several interesting papers on the lives of a few of the most outstanding of the native Telugu missionaries. At the close of the meeting the quarterly tea provided a delicious luncheon to all present.

Rev. A.J. Prosser spent Sunday with the Paradise and Clarence Baptist church giving two of his stirring and appealing addresses on Child Welfare work.

The 11th of August has been chosen for the date of the coming church aid festival. Those who attended the festival of last summer held at Burn Brae, residence of Mr. and Mrs. E.G. Morse, will want to reserve this date in anticipation of another evening of profitable entertainment.

A number from here attended the circus at Kentville.

Miss Maud Lane, Truro, Mr. D.C. Ells, Port Williams, Miss E.B. Marshall, Mr. Ernest Marshall, Clarence and Mr. V.C. Nixon of Bear River, were the guests recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. I.N. Banks.

Mr. and Mrs. Frank Balcom and family have moved to Lockport for the summer where Mr. Lockport is doing business.

Mr. and Mrs. Harding of U.S., who are touring the province in their car visited last week at the home of Mrs. Harding’s cousin, Mrs. C.S. Covert.

Mr. and Mrs. Sam Williams of New Glasgow are the week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Williams.

Mrs. Minnie Rice recently visited friends in Clarence.

Miss Sara Wallace of Wolfville, is visiting at the home of her aunt, Mrs. H.W. Longley.

Miss Minnie Sproule of St. John, is spending a two weeks vacation at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J.W. Sproule.

Miss Rowan of New York, is visiting at the home of her niece, Mrs. A.A. Whitman.

Mr. and Mrs. E.I. Rowan of New York and Mrs. James Johnston of St. John were recent guests of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur A. Whitman.

The Misses Bell and Marguerite Marshall visited recently at “Ellenhurst” home of Mrs. Vernon C. Morse.

Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Grant and family of Clarence and Earl Grant of Paradise were Sunday guests at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Percy Grant.

The “Help U” girls of the Sunday School, under the supervision of their teacher, Mrs. Frank Balcom, earned and presented to the church a gift of $40.00 to be used toward providing suitable electric lights for the church entrance.

A fund is being raised to perpetuate the memory of the late Dr. Vernon C. Morse. The memorial will according to plans take the form of a suitable electric light which will give service as a community street lamp, at the same time providing extra illumination for the lawn and grounds of the Paradise church property.

Institute Meet at Paradise – Splendid Programme Given – Personal Items Concerning Movements of Well Known People

A profitable and pleasant afternoon was spent on Thursday, July 17th at the home of Mrs. Rupert Chesley and her daughter, Mrs. Minne Rice when the Women’s Institute met for its July meeting. The programme of the afternoon was on the subject of Public Health. Mrs. H.A. Longley read a paper entitled “Cure of the Feet.” Mrs. Minnie Rice treated in a paper the ever important question of schoolhouse sanitation. A paper on the Care of Young Children was read by Mrs. J.W. Sproule, another entitled “Laugher as a Tonic” was given by Mrs. Ritchie Elliott, while the subject of Common Colds and their prevention was treated by the president, Mrs. R.S. Leonard.

Miss Tingley of N.B., guest of the afternoon gave reminiscences bearing on the subject of Public Health gathered from her experience as a trained nurse. Music for the afternoon was furnished by Mrs. Ritchie Elliott and Mrs. Ralph Beard, who sang a duet and little Miss Joice Elliott who sang a solo. Entertainment including the 10 cent luncheon was furnished by the hostess and committee.

An invitation from Mrs. Albert Angers of Lower Granville was received and accepted by the Women’s Institute to spend at her home the afternoon of the usual August picnic. The Institute has enjoyed Mrs. Anger’s hospitality on former occasions and is looking forward at this time to another delightful outing by the waterside.

Miss Frances Corning of Yarmouth, graduate of elocution of Acadia Ladies Seminary will visit friends in Paradise next month at which time she will give a recital in the Paradise Baptist church. Particulars will be furnished in the advertising columns.

Mr. H.A. Longley is at home convalescing, following an operation in the Middleton Hospital from which is his making hopeful recovery.

On Tuesday, July 22nd, Miss Charlotte Bowlby underwent an operation for enlarged tonsils, the operation being performed by Dr. L.R. Morse, assisted by Dr. W. C. Archibald.

Mr. and Mrs. Millege Daniels recently spent a week-end with friends in Lawrencetown.

Miss Evelyn Longley is at home after a several weeks vacation spent in Halifax, where she was the guest of her sister, Mrs. Wm. Daly.

Mrs. Williams and family of British Columbia, accompanied by her sister, Mrs. Robt. Leonard of Clarence, visited during the week at the home of Mrs. Rupert Chesley and Mrs. Minnie Rice.

Mrs. J.C. Phinney accompanied by her daughter, Mrs. H.H. Hopkins and family of N.B., motored to Bear River during the week where they visited friends.

Mrs. C.W. Durling has returned from Amesbury, Mass., where she enjoyed a somewhat lengthy visit with her sister, Mrs. Hinds.

Miss Bessie Wood, of Somerset, Kings Co., was the guest recently of her aunt, Mrs. Alvin Starratt.

Mr. Phinney and family of Cincinnati, while touring through the Province, called recently at the home of Mrs. Alvin Starratt.

Capt. and Mrs. S.S.O. Monies of England, have rented from Mrs. J.S. Longley, the former Mason homme, where they will spend the summer. Capt. Monies is a retired army officer from India and is looking about for a suitable permanent home in Nova Scotia.

Miss Emma Hillcoat of Amherst, spent a few days recently at the home of her uncle, Col. C.E. Bent.

Mr. Lewis Balcom, town clerk, of Trenton, N.S., and little son were guests recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Harry Balcom.

Miss Ethel Parlee, soloist of Main St. Baptist church, St. John, and her friend Miss Germina Tracey of N.B., were guests during the week of Miss Minne Sproule who is spending her vacation at her home here.

Following the going to Lockport of Mrs. F.C. Balcom and her resignation as Mission Band Supt., Mrs. W.S. Mercer was appointed Mission Band Supt. for the coming year.

Mr. and Mrs. John Shaffner, of Williamston, were guests recently at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Longley.
