Novel Writing: The Art of Blending Fact, Fiction and Fantasy
with Karen (Leonard) Kelloway
When: 9 – 10:30 am, Saturday, Sept. 9th
Location: The Paradise Heritage Centre
Did you know that Karen went to the Paradise School as a child and was in the last class before it closed?
Growing up in a small community certainly inspired her writing. In her workshop, she will give an overview of her latest novel and share tips on how she achieves a balance of realism while maintaining the mystique of the imaginary or unknown.
Specifically, Karen will discuss:
- The three anchors that shaped her latest novel, Keepers of the Pact
- Her research that yielded unexpected literary treasures
- The efforts made to weave in authentic Indigenous elements
In this interactive session, participants learn how to strengthen their fictional story through fact-checking and flow; how to allow their characters to evolve the story; and how to navigate editorial decisions.
Feel free to bring existing material to work on in the writing exercises.
