LOCALLY MADE QUILT

Nine Patch Heritage Pattern

Machine Pieced by the Paradise Village Quilters

Machine Quilted

Made with 100% cotton

Quilts were often made with pieces of worn-out clothing, but this usually only happened when fabric was particularly scarce or precious. Before the 1800s affluent women made quilts of wool, silk, linen or chintz allowing for their needlework skills to be showcased.

By the mid-1800s improved economic conditions allowed new fabrics to increase in popularity. Cottons became available creating a creative frenzy. Patchwork was the latest phenomenon and making blocks one at a time was the process “en vogue”.  Certain designs became standards at this time including Nine Patch, Pinwheel, Sawtooth Star, Irish Chain, and Flying Geese.

The pattern we have chosen for the Paradise Historical Society is the Nine Patch; a pattern with heritage and historical significance which alternates and joins two contrasting fabric colours to create a checkerboard pattern.  This pattern is very simple but effective in creating an elegantly understated design to stand the test of time.

The Paradise Village Quilters started in 1996 and has been going strong ever since.  Over the years they have made many charity quilts for various local, national, and international organizations. They have lost some amazing ladies but have also had many new quilters join them in that time.

100% Wool Hand-Hooked Rug

Value: $ 500.00

100% Wool Hand-Hooked Rug

Size: Approx. 18″ x 41″ (46 cm x 104 cm)

Designed and Made by Monica Bailey

Born in Victoria, British Columbia, but calling Nova Scotia home for most of her life, Monica now resides in Bridgetown, NS with her husband Paul.

Monica has been rug hooking for 18 years. She was drawn to the craft when she saw a friend calmly pulling loops as she kept her husband company in his hospital room. An avid thrifter, she was even more thrilled to learn that these beautiful rugs were made from recycled garments!

“I find all aspects of rug hooking very satisfying. From the thrill of the hunt to pattern design and colour selection to the relaxing pull of each loop and the completion of a beautiful, yet practical work of art,” says Monica.

Monica loves to share her craft and enjoys teaching beginners. She is a member of SOFAAR (Society of Fabric Artists of the Annapolis River).

The Paradise Historical Society is fortunate to have the historic building originally called the Paradise Academy built circa 1894 as the home for our developing heritage centre. Along with ownership of this magnificent building and the surrounding grounds comes the responsibility of maintaining this piece of history.
