SUMMARY:Rope Basket Workshop
DESCRIPTION:The Paradise Historical Society is hosting a Rope Basket workshop. \nNautical rope knots have been used for centuries by mariners to secure sails and rigging on ships and boats. Variations or repetitions of certain knots can create a variety of functional and decorative items\, such as mats that protect decks from the rigging\, to surround railings or to stand on for cushioning. \nPresenter\, Karen Morley\, resides in Cottage Cove where she makes items from “reclaimed” lobster rope and sells them at the Clarence Market on Sundays. \nKaren invites you to join her to learn this art of decorative nautical knot making. \nParticipants will learn how to first create a nautical thump mat which will then be turned into a bowl. This useful bowl\, approximately 10 inches in diameter\, can hold fruits\, bread or any items you wish. \nWritten instructions will be provided. \nDate & Time: Saturday\, October 18\, 2025\, from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm (or until your bowl is finished) \nLocation: Paradise Heritage Centre at 10307 Highway #1 in Paradise. \nCost: $50.00 which includes all the materials \nInstructor: Karen Morley \nPlease bring a lunch. \nTo register please send an email to Barbara or send her a direct/private message on the Paradise Historical Society Facebook page. \nPlease click HERE to send Barbara an email.

SUMMARY:History and Heritage Seeds with 'Revival Seeds'
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to a special opportunity at the Paradise Heritage Centre when we combine an amazing family history with a chance to learn  about heritage seeds and how to grow them. \nIn 1903\, Iwan and Anna Guryn immigrated from the Austro-Hungarian Empire (which is now known as the Western Ukraine) to Canada with fifteen dollars and a trunk of assorted seeds. Today Ken and Kathy Byrka carry on the family memory and method of seed preservation and sustainable farming. They hold to values that matter today – care of the land\, respect and gratitude for those who have come before us\, and innovative plans for tomorrow. \nThey will bring family stories from generations for you to hear\, seeds for you to buy\, and answers to your questions as you think about how you might garden –  whether in porch containers or fertile fields. \nThe event will take place on Saturday\, April 11\, 2026\, at 3:00 pm at the Paradise Heritage Centre \nAdmission is free but we ask you to register so we can plan appropriately. \nLight refreshments will be served. \nThis event is full and registration is closed.

SUMMARY:Signature Quilt Quest
DESCRIPTION:Did you ever think of how our foremothers who created special quilts for remembrance\, fundraising\, or gifts\, were really the keepers of history? \n This is especially true for “Signature Quilts”. \nThey were given as presentation gifts for\, say a minister leaving the community or a bride moving to a new home. Perhaps a family member emigrated to another country or province\, and the signatures embroidered with love and care. “Remember us! Remember where you came from! “ \n Sometimes a quilt would be a fundraiser for a church\, an organization\, a community. You would pay ten cents or so to have your name embroidered. It added up\, and such quilts made many contributions to community infrastructure or organizations. These are valuable historical  and genealogical documents as well as cherished artifacts. \nThe Paradise Historical Society is the grateful recipient of one such quilt.  We invite you to a very special viewing –  a Quest\, if you like. Our quilt has 221 signatures embroidered on white cotton. We invite you to come and see if you recognize the names of community members or your ancestors from the early 20th century – or just to see this bit of living history. \nThe quilt is dated 1911/12 and existed or travelled for months before it was finished. There are names from Paradise\, Nictaux\, Kingston\, Port Williams\, New Albany\, even Cuba! There are family names\, clergy names\, boarders’ names-names of people here before us who may or may not still be in our memory. \nThe event will take place on Sunday\, April 19\, 2026\, at 2:00 pm at the Paradise Heritage Centre \nTea and cake will be served. \nAdmission is free but we ask you to register so we know how big we need to make our cake. \nPlease enable JavaScript in your browser to complete this form.Contact Name *Email *EmailConfirm EmailNumber of People Attending In Your Group *Would You Like to Sign Up For the Paradise Historical Society Email List? *Yes\, please sign me up!No\, please use my email address for notifications about this event only. Please check the 'YES' box if you'd like to sign up to our general email list to receive notifications about news\, updates\, and notifications for future events.Questions? Her bestselling debut novel\, The Berry Pickers \, won the Barnes and Nobel Discover Prize\, the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction\, the Crime Writers of Canada Best First Novel Award\, and the Dartmouth Book Award. Her short story collection\, Waiting for the Long Night Moon was released in August 2024 and was shortlisted for the Alistair McLeod short fiction prize. Her next novel\, The Birthing Tree\, will be published in September of 2026.\n\nShe has a certificate in creative writing from the University of Toronto\, and she is a graduate of the Master of Fine Arts program at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe\, New Mexico. She is a member of Glooscap First Nation and lives in the Annapolis Valley with her fur babies.\n\n“Amanda Peters has a gift for tracing the boundaries of time\, place\, and generations. Her marvel of a first novel\, The Berry Pickers\, was inspired by her father’s stories of summers spent traveling with his family from Nova Scotia to harvest blueberries in Maine.”- Jane Ciabattari in Literary Hub\n\n\n\n	SESSION LEADER: Jane Baskwell with "Together in Time: Remembering the Children of Roxbury" \n\nJane is a Nova Scotia writer whose work blends history\, reflection\, and storytelling. She is the author of Together in Time\, inspired by the abandoned settlement of Roxbury and the children whose lives were rarely recorded. Through her writing and public talks\, Jane explores how memory survives in place and story\, and how imaginative work can help illuminate gaps in the historical record. She lives in Lawrencetown\, where landscape and local history strongly inform her work.\n\nJane says\, “Roxbury has long been described as a ghost town\, but what first drew me there—and what has kept drawing me back—was not simply the idea of ghosts\, but a sense of presence. A feeling that the past is not finished speaking. Over time\, what I felt most present were not the adults whose names appear in official records\, but the children—many of whom died young\, were buried without markers\, and were remembered only through fragile oral stories now at risk of disappearing.” \n\nThrough the children of Roxbury\, we can explore how such stories “can function as acts of remembrance” when all the official stories and records can not. \n\n\n\n	SESSION LEADER: Annapolis Heritage Society with "Israel Delap (1841-1891)- Annapolis County Sea Captain in His Own Voice " \n\nThe Annapolis Heritage Society was established in 1965 as the Historic Restoration Enterprises. After accomplishing the remarkable task of reclaiming\, preserving\, and displaying the town’s built history\, they have become more than they first envisioned. \n\nIn the words of their website\, “Recognizing the wealth of heritage resources resulting from 400 years of European settlement and the pre-dating Mi’kmaq occupation\, the Society has continued to broaden its activities and now includes artifacts\, genealogical and archival holdings\, photo and costume collections and active heritage programming.” \n\nThey are uniquely suited to help us hear the voice of Captain Israel Delap through his poignant diary entries as he sailed with and without his wife\, Lucretia Croscup Delap and daughter\, Mary Amelia\, until his untimely death far from home. He feared the dangers of the sea\, but it was not that danger that killed him. \n\n\n\n\n \nRegistration\nRegistration has been closed as the conference is full. Thank you.
